The Theatre in the Woods

American Players Theatre resides near the village of Spring Green, Wisconsin...an area equal parts artists' community and down-to-earth farm town. The unpretentious nature of the the town combines with its pastoral beauty to make APT a truly unique experience. The outdoor amphitheater is located atop an emerald hill beneath a blanket of sun, moon and stars. In contrast, the 200-seat Touchstone Theatre - which will host its grand opening in July 2009 - has amenities like a roof and wall. It's small stage and intimate setting provide the perfect complement to the Up the Hill Theatre, and allows APT to further explore and enhance the thing that brought us all together in the first place: the plays. All told, APT hosts eight productions in rotating repertory each summer from June through October: five plays Up the Hill and three in the Touchstone.

The up the hill amphitheater is situated in a naturally acoustical bowl ringed by towering trees with thrust stage encompassed on three sides by 1,148 comfortably cushioned seats.

Prior to each show, hundreds of folks arrive to picnic on the grounds, which include 110 acres of woods and meadows.

Gravel walking paths lead up to the Theatre from the free parking lot. There’s a shuttle bus for those who prefer to ride, as well as concessions and air-conditioned gift shop in the picnic grounds and up the hill in the Theatre.
